The battle of the sexes is alive and thriving in the Ensign Fleet. Dianne Kube, sailing Onrust is taking on Wes Kroeze sailing Dip n Chip on Wednesday nights. Their crews are not completely “gender pure”, but it is billed as girls against boys. First round went to the girls when Dianne, flying a spinnaker, overtook Wes on the last downwind leg. Wes was the winner of the Nash Regatta with Dianne in his crew, but Dianne (“Queen of the whole damn thing”) is conceding nothing on Wednesday nights.

In the Nash Regatta, Nick Lubar may face charges from DNR for illegal fishing. He said it was an accident, but he was definitely trawling with his spinnaker under the boat for a while. Rumor has it that he did enjoy a good walleye dinner the next night but the proof has been consumed. Except when fishing, Nick has set the pace for the Ensign fleet, winning every club race he has entered in the summer series.

The Ensign National Regatta will have an international flavor. Within the past year, a new Ensign was shipped to Japan and the owners of that handsome vessel will be in Cleveland as spectators at the National Regatta.

Vince Morvillo is a blind Ensign sailor who was the winner of the National Regatta two years ago and finished second last year. He has agreed to a speaking engagement at the Cleveland Sight Center on Friday, August 11, 2006. He is an excellent speaker and truly an inspiration. All sailors and crew, sighted was well as impaired, are invited to hear him.

Although the response to the request for volunteers for the National Regatta has been very good, we would still be delighted to have more help. The volunteer forms are available outside the Edgewater office or Dianne Kube can be reached at dmkube@adelphia.net.
